Renaissance faire rules to check before you go

Every faire publishes its own policy. Read it on the event website before you plan the outfit. These rules are common:

• Weapons. Many faires allow blades only if they are sheathed and peace-tied, which means secured into the sheath with a cord or cable tie so they cannot be drawn. Some ban real blades completely. Bows usually have to be unstrung. Security will check at the gate.
• Masks and face coverings. Some events restrict full-face masks for adults.
• Coverage. Faires are family events. Costumes need to cover what a swimsuit would cover, and some events ask for more.
• Footwear. Shoes are required. Bare feet are not allowed on most sites.
• Themed weekends. Many faires run pirate, Viking, fantasy or Celtic weekends. Matching the theme is optional, but it helps you choose.

What to wear in summer and hot weather

Heat is the main reason people regret an outfit. Most faires run in summer on open fields with little shade.

• Use leather as the accent. Wear a vest, jerkin, corset belt, kilt or bracers over linen or cotton. Leave the long coat and the full armour at home.
• Choose natural fibres underneath. Linen and cotton breathe. Polyester shirts trap heat under leather.

Wear them for at least a week beforehand. If you do not own boots, plain dark walking shoes are better than new boots that rub. Avoid heels, thin soles and anything white.

Leather does not stretch like knitted fabric, so measure before you order.

• Measure your chest, waist and hips over the shirt or chemise you will wear underneath.

1. Brush off dust and dried mud. Use a soft brush, then wipe with a damp cloth.
2. Air it. Hang leather on a wide hanger in a room with moving air for a day. This clears sweat and smoke.
3. Dry it slowly if it got wet. Keep it at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sun.
4. Condition it. Apply a thin coat of leather conditioner once or twice a season. Test on a hidden area first.
5. Store it properly. Hang it in a breathable garment bag. Do not store leather in plastic or fold it for months.

Wash the shirt or chemise after every wear. Do not machine wash the leather.
